Beijing Games Flame to Scale Mount Everest
Adjust font size:

The sacred flame of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will travel across Mount Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, the highest peak of the earth.

China's veteran mountaineer, Wang Yongfeng, made the announcement. He has recently completed a "7 plus 2" grand slam mission which scales over the highest peaks of the seven continents and the two poles.

During an exclusive interview with CRIEnglish.com Friday afternoon, Wang Yongfeng said the Beijing Olympics flame project is now underway.

"Climbers will be selected in the first half of the year. In the second half of the year, those chosen will undergo special training", he said.

The climbers will be selected from among China's professional mountaineers including well-trained professionals from various mountaineering clubs in the country.

Although Wang Yongfeng is very enthusiastic and is perhaps the most qualified candidate, the veteran climber believes the opportunity belongs to the younger generation.
