China's young skater Li Ye has set a new world record in men's 1000-meter short-track speed skating event at the ongoing Winter Olympic Games in Turin.

22-year-old Li led all skaters in the 1000-meter quarterfinals with a world record time of 1:27.048.

He broke the record of 1:27.185 set by Canadian Mathieu Turcotte at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.

Fellow Chinese Li Jiajun also moved into the quarters by placing first in the sixth heat.

Meanwhile, the Chinese men's team has advanced into the final competition of the 5000 meter relay event.
