Despite the weak economy, the net worth of the wealthiest in the United States is up 12% over a year ago, and an all-time high 70% of this year's 400 are self-made.

The rich get richer--again. Soros cracked the top 10. Zuckerberg is in the top 20. Here is  the top 30 list in the 30th annual ranking by the Forbes.

   James Simons

The "Quant King" retired from his Renaissance Technologies two years ago but continues to enjoy proceeds: the fund earned 30% in 2010 and is still up this year. Simons stepped down from day-to-day management of RenTec in October 2009, but remains chairman and majority shareholder of the $15 billion firm. The MIT grad started his career as a theoretical mathematician and taught at Harvard. Simons received his Ph.D. from UC, Berkeley and was soon breaking codes for the U.S. Department of Defense during the Vietnam War. He later left to take a job heading the math department at SUNY-Stony Brook. He founded hedge fund Renaissance Technologies in 1982. The fund uses computer modeling to find inefficiencies in highly liquid securities. Simons has shown a preference for hiring PhDs over MBAs. He chairs Math for America and supports autism research.
