Animal Man #1 is another of the books that surprised me. Jeff Lemire's writing makes this one of the must-read titles of the New 52, with dead-on character writing and off-kilter sensibilities that make this anything but a typical superhero title. Travel Foreman's unique artistic style really suits the book so well, with attention to the little details of a room that help bring the everyday-life storytelling into focus. Lemire has an ability to portray the ordinary daily life of a hero, to mix super-powered heroics with conversations about dinner and getting a pet, and to inject painful human emotion and trauma as well as unexpectedly graphic and horrifying imagery while always seeming to maintain a steady pace that's neither rushed nor lagging. I'm going to make what I'm sure some will consider a shocking observation, but I think it's worth noting: if DC ever moves ahead with the plan to develop spinoff books based on the Watchmen universe, Jeff Lemire needs to be one of the first writers they call. I greatly admire what he's done with Animal Man, and boy does he ever know how to set up an ending that guarantees you'll come back for more next month!
