Batwoman #1 shares a key distinction with Swamp Thing, in that this bat-book likewise had big shoes to fill. Writer Greg Rucka and artist J.H. Williams III collaborated on the famous run in Detective Comics that turned Batwoman into a modern fan-favorite. It was one of the best-written monthlies you could find, and featured the most gorgeous artwork of any title around. Well, Rucka is gone, but J.H. Williams III has taken over writing duties along with cowriter W. Haden Blackman, and they managed the near-impossible task of living up to the quality established during the Detective Comics run. Williams is still on art duties as well, and the overall effect is a book that harkens back to some of the more gothic Batman tales by Dennis O'Neil during the famous 1970's era. It's amazing how much territory and characterization is covered in the pages of this one book, and how much is happening visually on every page. A perfect book.
