Aquaman #1 is another Geoff Johns joint, and folks, he knocks it right out of the park. No other monthly will make you laugh more than Johns' self-aware presentation full of pop-culture reference to Aquaman’s less than impressive reputation with the public and media. Artist Ivan Reis has a good working relationship with Johns, the two having collaborated on multiple titles in the past, and they have a very nice, comfortable fit here. This is the kind of writing and art that can make Aquaman popular again and help put a lot of misconceptions and disrespect to rest by tackling it head-on. I hope Aquaman's interactions with the public and law enforcement remain a recurring theme, because there's not only humor and mainstream perceptions to be explored there, but also an unexpected element of humanizing the character and making him feel more relevant. Oh, and this is another book that really knows how to end with a surprise, and a great final line plus image that will give you a shudder.
