Action Comics #1 is Grant Morrison doing what he does best — taking an iconic figure and revisiting their history to give the past new relevance and bring continuity and completeness to decades of storytelling. Anyone who read his marvelous "Batman R.I.P". arc for example, has seen the way Morrison ingeniously gives relevance and modernity to even those parts of a character's past that fans think (mistakenly, as Morrison proves) are best left forgotten. Superman as populist, Superman leaping instead of flying, Superman feeling pain, Superman loved by the "average" public, feared by the powerful and corrupt. This is what Morrison gives us, interwoven with as much pure fun and excitement as can be packed into one issue. Rags Morales' artwork aids Morrison with crisp, clear imagery showing us a Superman who grins with sheer joy as he leaps through Metropolis. What Grant Morrison has done, in case it’s not obvious yet, is to make Superman truly relevant again.
