A wealth of Western European paintings from the 13th to 19th centuries, free entry, and a prime location on Trafalgar Square combine to make the National Gallery very popular. While most come to see the Constables and Van Goghs, the surprise hit of 2010 was Ed and Nancy Kienholz's installation of Amsterdam's red-light district, The Hoerengracht—the National Gallery's first modern installation. It brought in 2,400 daily visitors during its run and was one of the most successful art shows in London last year.
