Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was born in Pittsburgh, U.S. Warhol made himself into a famous and legendary figure in the art world of the 20th century. He was a painter, printmaker, filmmaker, as well as the leading figure for pop art, a visual art movement extremely popular in the second half of the 20th century. The Prince of Pop set his fame by employing his mass-production techniques to output a large number of artworks.
The "deeply superficial person" was one the world's most expensive artists of all time, and the favorite in Western auction house. His iconic four-panel "Self-Portrait (1963-1964)" in blue of four variations was hammered for US$34.25 million at Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Sale in New York in May, 2011, a world record for a Warhol self-portrait and his best result in 2011. His 1963 painting-Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I) - sold for US$71.7 million at Christie's New York in May 2007, a record high for the artist at auction.
