The university, founded in 1953 as Beijing Petroleum Institute, is a national key university under the direct administration of China's Ministry of Education. It moved to Dongying, Shandong Province in 1969. The university is regarded as a nursery for talents heading into China's oil and petrochemical industry. Presently, the university's full time teaching staff numbers in excess of 1, 500, of which 819 are full or associate professors. There are 744 master's supervisors and 138 doctoral supervisors.
