China University of Petroleum (East China) was ranked 76th in 2009 with a score of 32.89. In that year, only 16.45 percent of postgraduate tutors were female while 83.55 percent were male. The female ratio was 2.76 percentage points higher than in 2005, when the university was ranked 78th in this respect.
The university, founded in 1953 as Beijing Petroleum Institute, is a national key university under the direct administration of China's Ministry of Education. It moved to Dongying, Shandong Province in 1969. The university is regarded as a nursery for talents heading into China's oil and petrochemical industry. Presently, the university's full time teaching staff numbers in excess of 1, 500, of which 819 are full or associate professors. There are 744 master's supervisors and 138 doctoral supervisors.
