Top 10 highest-paying provincial capitals

According to the latest figures released by local statistics bureaus, Guangzhou outdid all other provincial capitals and municipalities in terms of its urban residents' average earnings.

In 2011, Guangzhou, an economic powerhouse located in southern China, paid its residents an average annual salary of 9,041 US dollars, closely followed by the cities of Beijing and Nanjing with 8,820 US dollars and 8,607 US dollars, respectively.

At the time of going to press, 22 provincial capitals, as well as four municipalities directly under the Central Government, have announced their 2011 average salaries for urban residents working in non-private sectors. Five other provincial capital cities-Urumqi, Nanning, Lanzhou, Lhasa and Haikou-are yet to unveil their figures.

Last year, 11 Chinese cities surpassed the national average of 42,452 yuan, with cities located in the more developed eastern areas offering better paychecks than their counterparts located in the lesser developed western areas.

Below follows the top 10 of Chinese provincial capital cities and municipalities that offer their employees the highest paychecks.
