Xu Beihong (1895-1953), born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, was critically acclaimed as the "father of modern Chinese painting." Xu was a master of styles, both with oils and Chinese inks.

Xu's highest ever record was set by "Cultivation on the Peaceful Land " (150cm x 250cm), which fetched US$40 million in 2011 at Poly International Auction Co., Ltd.

However, Xu's works took a dive on the high-end market in 2012. His best result for 2012 was generated by his 1942 "Seven Magpies" (92cm × 61cm), which fetched US$4.83 million at Beijing Poly International Auction Co., Ltd.
