Unless frightened or harmed, a snake will not attack humans -- in most cases, that is. Nontoxic snakes are usually harmless. However, their bites can lead to tissue injury and even cause the need for limb amputation. Only 250 species among the 725 snake species in the world can kill a human with one single bite. Some 50,000 deaths are caused by snakes every year.
