Artists, such as painters, are important contributors to the development of human society. In modern Chinese history alone, countless numbers of painters have showed off their outstanding skills in oil, sketch or Chinese ink painting, featuring human figures, animals and landscapes. Many masters have already passed away, but their names and works remain known across the globe till this day.

Let's take a look at the top 10 most celebrated modern Chinese painters.

 Huang Zhou(黄胄)

Huang Zhou (1925-1997), born in Li County of Hebei Province, was a Chinese artist and collector who made great contributions to boosting modern Chinese art. He was also known as Liang Yezi or Miao Di. In his early years, Huang served as a staff artist in the military.

Huang, who believed that "art comes from life," travelled across the country to experience different ways of life and look for new materials to integrate into his art. He was well-versed in the portrayals of figures, landscapes, flowers and animals, especially large-scaled paintings featuring grand scenes and multiple figures. He was best-noted for his paintings depicting the daily lives of various ethnic minorities. His lifelike donkeys are well known both at home and abroad.
