Totoro is a cartoon figure in "My Neighbor Totoro," a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film tells the story of a professor's two young daughters and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan.

In the film, Totoro is characterized as a giant spirit who protects the two sisters and carries them over the forests on an enchanted journey. With grey fur and pointy ears, Totoro is widely thought to be a chinchilla, a type of nocturnal rodent inhabiting the Andes Mountains in South America.
