Hong Kong second-wave filmmaker Wong Kar-wai is currently working on the December release of his new film "The Grandmasters", based on the life story of the Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man. The film, which he spent the last 13 years making, is highly anticipated by fans and critics alike.

Starting from his directorial debut "As Tears Go By" (1988), Wong has been internationally recognized as an auteur for his visually unique, highly stylized and emotionally resonant work. He won the Best Director award from the 10th Hong Kong Film Awards and the 28th Taiwan Golden Horse Film Awards in 1991 for his film "Days of Being Wild". Wong was ranked No. 3 on the British Film Institute's Sight & Sound Top 10 Directors list of modern times.

His first major international recognition was at the 50th Cannes Film Festival in 1997, when he was granted the Best Director for "Happy Together", making him the first Chinese director to win the title. He was also the first Chinese director to preside over the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. His film "In the Mood for Love" (2000), which starred Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, received widespread critical acclaim and won two awards for best actor and technique.
