The peak will be January 1, with the passenger turnout to reach 182,000, said railway officials.

Railway authorities will add seven extra trains to neighboring cities, including Suzhou, Wuxi and Hefei, during the holiday.

Shanghai South Long-Distance Bus Station is expecting 80,000 passengers during the holiday, a 10 percent jump compared to last year. The peak will arrive today and tomorrow with a daily volume of 20,000.

Out-patient services of local hospitals will stop during the three-day New Year holiday beginning tomorrow, but emergency services will be available all day and night during the holiday, said the Shanghai Health Bureau.

Because of the presence of swine flu, local health authorities have ordered fever clinics at hospitals to be open to patients around the clock.
