Vics
Vics was the first one to give Beijing a chance to showcase a new brand of sexy. While the west gate Gongti clubs are all about flashy futuristic design, Vics leans slightly more towards mature refinement: a kind of ornate living room where cigars are not uncommonly smoked. Low purple mood lighting helps cool down the joint when it gets sweaty.
Two dance rooms are separated by the hall bordered by requisite karaoke booths. The one bordered by a balcony and booths is the one which packs the dance floor like sardines, not necessarily because the DJ is any better. It's just the place to be.
Stereotypically attractive women in tight black dresses wiggle their hips, while moneyed men shimmy up to them, hoping that they might be attracted to an older guy who wears a business suit in a hip hop club. Fair enough, there's not really enough room to properly dance, but that doesn't seem to bother the couples who get busy making out on the dance floor.
Of all the Gongti clubs, Vics' mainstream hip hop DJs demonstrate the most awareness about flow and set cohesion. The music is only loosely hip hop, and the odd tribal house or Beyonce track squeezes into the DJ set, which is totally fine. Every other Gongti club has an ability to play a track or two that most clubbers would prefer to banish from club speakers forevermore. Props to Vics for hitting the hits and dropping the misses.
Vics is also the one Gongti club which has attracted the biggest following of expats and foreigners. You won't see them during the week, but Friday and Saturday, they will constitute as much as half of the dance floor. It's well-known as a popular hook-up joint, but as Vics seems to have the highest quality hip hop music in town, it'd be hard to keep the masses away.
*Friday night admission: 50 yuan
