This was the most amazing day so far. Of course, it started with breakfast and all my favourite dishes! But enough about that for now. We headed out for Qinhai Lake, 3,000 meters high on the Tibetan Plateau. We headed northwest out of Dining driving over snow-covered roads and through mountain tunnels. We'd reach an altitude of 3500 meters before descending to the lake. We passed through a Tibetan town with a large statue of the Wencheng Princess, then through miles of grassland, sheep, and yak.

We passed snow-covered mountains, driving for long stretches without seeing a car or even another human being. Finally at the lake we witness the passing of a herd of sheep. It was so cold and the wind made it worse. Looking out over the vast lake and distant mountains, you could almost imagine you were in Antarctica. We watched and listened to flocks of geese rising and falling over the lake.

It was lunchtime, but we needed to drive for another 90 minutes to find civilization, i.e., a restaurant. Eventually, Atomic City rose into view, where we ate steaming bowls of beef noodles. After lunch we visited a museum honouring folk music artist Wang Luobin. Quite fitting because later, after another terrific meal, we bumped into Taiwan singing star Chyi Chin in our hotel lobby! What a day!
