Situated on the east mountain slope of the southern peak of Mount Hua, the Chang Kong Cliff Roadwas was built about 700 years ago by He Zhizhen, the first master of the Mount Hua Sect of Taoism in Yuan Dynasty, to facilitate his intention to leave the noisy world to practice Taoism and so become an immortal. The path was built by laying planks on stone nails driven deep into the surface of the steep mountain slopes. The path perches midway on the steep mountain slopes, and iron chains stretch along the road to offer protection to people. Long stone pieces are used to create a narrow road surface while stone pillars are placed underneath to support the plank road. Tourists have to be very careful when taking any step on the road while trying best to stay close to the surface of the mountain side of the plank road. It is dubbed the top natural barrier in Mount Hua.
