An Indonesian airliner had to turn back to the airport in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou in Guangdong Province after a door was found not properly closed.

The Sriwijaya Air jet was already in the air for an hour and a half on its journey from Guangzhou to Bali, a trip that usually takes five hours.

The plane carrying 180 passengers left Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport at 3 a.m. and returned at 6 a.m. Videos showed some passengers becoming excited and demanding an explanation from the crew.

Half an hour after landing in Guangzhou, passengers were asked to board the plane again after they were told the crew finished a check.

An official with the airline told Southern Metropolis Daily that the front door of the plane was not properly closed although indicators inside the cockpit showed the opposite.

"After finding the problem, the captain decided to dump fuel before returning to land," he said.

The plane landed on the resort island today. More than 20 passengers who chose to not re-board the plane are in negotiations with the airline over ticket refunds.
