A growing number of Chinese seniors are reportedly planning trips to the polar regions, reports thepaper.cn.

3,944 people from China traveled to the South Pole in 2016, 40 times the number from 2008.

It's being said the average age of those taking the high-cost trips from China is 55.

Observers suggest the length of the polar tours, which can take between 15 to 30 days, appeal to older Chinese people who have the means.

Most major tourism agencies in China have begun promoting polar tourism through the latter half of 2017. However, the trips aren't cheap.

LY.COM, a Chinese tour provider, estimates costs for polar tours for the 2018-2019 season will run anywhere from 70,000 rmb to 600,000 rmb.

Ctrip is quoting prices as high as 880,000 rmb, which is the purchase price for an average small apartment in certain smaller cities in China.
