The Shanghai Tourism Administration said on Thursday morning it is investigating several five-star hotels in Shanghai after they were exposed undertaking unsanitary cleaning practices.

Fourteen luxury hotels, including seven in Shanghai, were exposed in an online video, which showed a variety of sanitation problems, including cleaners using bath towels and dirty sponges and towels to clean cups, washstands and toilets, as well as soaking cups in shampoo.

A cleaner at Bulgari Hotel Shanghai was shown collecting disposable plastic cup covers from garbage bins, and using towels used by guests to clean cups and washstands.

Four Seasons Shanghai was exposed using the same cleaning sponge that had been used in a bathroom to clean washstands and cups — the dirty sponge was then used in different rooms. In addition, its worker was shown using dirty towels to clean cups.

The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai was seen soaking cups in shampoo and using bath towels to wash bathroom glass, while a cleaner at Waldorf Astoria Shanghai was shown using the same sponge to wash cups, washstands and toilets.

Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Le Royal Meridien Shanghai and the Puli Hotel and Spa were exposed for similar problems.

The administration said it will impose severe punishment if these issues are verified as factual.

It would also advise China's authorities assessing hotels' star ratings to improve relevant evaluation criterion to stamp out similar incidents, it said.
