Northwestern Beijing's Yanqing district was awarded the title of "National Forest City" by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration (SFGA) on Nov. 15, joining 28 other cities and county-level districts to be given the honor in China in 2019.

A national forest city refers to a city or a county with an urban ecological system of mainly forest which meets the forest standards set out by the SFGA.

Yu Bo, deputy head of Yanqing, revealed that the district launched a campaign to build itself into a "National Forest City" in 2016. The district allocated 5.01 billion yuan ($710 million) for the campaign over the past three years. In addition, local people are being encouraged to return farming land so it can be converted into forest. In return, they are subsidized annually and offered jobs related to forest management.

After three years of construction, Yanqing has been transformed. Now visitors and residents can enjoy green rolling hills, clear water and expansive parks. It has increased its forestation area to 118,200 hectares with a forest coverage rate of 59.28%, along with a per capita park-and-green land area of 46.13 square meters.
