A plateau horticultural park opened to the public on Saturday in northwest China's Qinghai Province.

With an average altitude of 2,200 meters, the first phase of the park in Xining, the provincial capital, covers a total area of nearly 135 hectares, with 75,000 trees and more than 3 million flowers and plants.

Located between an industrial zone and a township, the park is free for locals and tourists.

"The park will serve as a green barrier between the industrial zone and the urban residential area, which helps us explore a green path to realize industrial development and a livable environment for the plateau city," said Tao Yaqin, an official in charge of the park's construction.

Cold- and drought-resistant flowers and plants, such as the lilac and the Chinese rose, were selected for plantation because of the altitude, low temperatures, barren soil, and low precipitation in the area.

The second phase of the park will be completed next year.
