Boasting poetic sceneries, the Jianmen Pass and the cypress lined ancient road system Cuiyunlang - two major attractions of the scenic area - have evoked romantic ideas of Chinese poets throughout the history, including the Tang Dynasty (618-907) greats Li Bai and Du Fu.

Some 10 kilometers south of the seat of Jian'ge county, the Jianmen Pass is located at where the Dajian Mountain, part of the Jianmen Mountains, is interrupted. Unique Danxia landforms created precipitous cliffs stretching for thousands of kilometers here. It used to be a strategic gateway in ancient times.

Coming out of a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) poem, Cuiyunlang is an artistic expression of the ancient road network built across Jian'ge that is lined by thousands of verdant cypresses planted through more than 2,000 years. It comprises an important part of the ancient road system linking Sichuan to the outside, known as Shu Dao in Chinese.
