More than 160,000 tourists from home and overseas visited florid red lantern-decorated temple fairs held in public parks in Beijing in the first two days of China's lunar New Year, starting Sunday.

The figure was given by the Beijing Municipal Administration Center of Parks Tuesday.

It is a Chinese tradition of organizing social activities on open grounds such as a temple square. Temple fairs are normally held on festive days. Beijing's temple fairs mainly feature parades of cultural performances, and marketplaces for traditional snacks and handicrafts.

Beijing has staged 62 such temple fairs during the Spring Festival.

The one held in the Beihai Park in downtown Beijing, for example, replays the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) royal prayer ceremony wherein tourists could have a rare chance to participate in prayer like royals.

Spring Festival is the most important traditional Chinese festive event in a year and is an occasion for reunions of family members, relatives and friends, completed with plenty of eating and fun-making. The Spring Festival holiday this year began Saturday and will last for a week.
