Typhoon Kestana nears China's southernmost island province of Hainan on Tuesday, and is heading westward to Vietnam.
The typhoon is 260 km away from Sanya City, Hainan. At the centre of the storm winds were measured at 126 km per hour. Due to the typhoon's effect, Hainan received heavy downpours and strong gale force winds. Things are expected to clear on Thursday.
Sanya City, the most famous beach resort on the island, closed all tourist spots and ordered tourists from swimming in the sea. The city government ordered all outdoor activities canceled and schools closed on Monday and Tuesday.
The city's airport canceled 40 flights Monday, leaving 1,220 passengers stranded. On Tuesday morning, 10 flights were able to take off from the airport.
