Chinese archaeologists have spent a year and a half restoring an ancient crown from the Tang Dynasty. Reports say it's the only headdress from the period to ever be repaired successfully.

Amber, pearls, rubies and gold, Chinese craftsmen used any expensive materials they could find to create this unique treasure. Countless tiny golden balls were set into the surface of the crown. They can only be seen under a microscope.

Yang Junchang, Archaeologist, said, "Those tiny golden balls smooth the light reflected from the crown. Thus, you can appreciate the unique beauty of it."

The headdress was found at a Tang Dynasty tomb in Qu Yang, Shanxi Province, in 2001. According to the epitaph, the crown belonged to the fifth generation of Emperor Gao Zu.

Over the past 1200 years, the tomb was damaged by floods and earthquake. Only hundreds of small pieces remained. This made the restoration work exceedingly difficult.

Following documents and wall paintings found in the tomb, researchers took more than a year to finish their repair work.

Experts say funeral objects are much more difficult to fix because of grave robberies and weathering. This fact make the Tang Dynasty crown extremely valuable.
