Tango dancers from Argentina and around the world have gathered at a Buenos Aires theatre for the Tango World Festival. This festival serves as the warm up for the 8th Tango World Championships which start next Monday.

The Japanese couple, Hiroshi and Kioko Yamao, winner of the 2009 championship in the Salon category, danced on stage in front of a crowd of tango enthusiasts. Salon is the most traditional of Argentine tangos and more structured with rules that dictate. Tango emerged as a dance style in the late 1800s in the suburbs of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, Uruguay. It slowly became popular in Europe, the United States, and Japan.

The Tango World Championships attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Buenos Aires every year, according to local authorities. The event has become increasingly international, since its debut in 2002. The tango was declared part of the world's cultural heritage by the United Nations last September.
