World Diabetes Day is celebrated on 14th November every year. Since 1991 the Day has been raising awareness about diabetes throughout the world. The slogan for this year is "Act on Diabetes. Now".
The World Health Organization estimates there are some 360 million diabetics in the world. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. Nearly 4 million lives are lost annually due to related complications. Simply put, one person dies every 8 seconds.
Diabetes can affect anyone irrespective of age, economic status, and nationality. This year's Day focuses on education, prevention and the power of knowledge. Research suggests lifestyle modifications can lower the risk of diabetes.
