The office of spokesmen of the Chinese Foreign ministry said Thursday evening that authorities are investigating an incident in which Chongqing Vice Mayor Wang Lijun entered the US consulate general in southwest China and remained there for one day.
In response to inquiries, the office said Wang entered the US consulate general in Chengdu on Feb. 6 and left after staying there for one day.
Wang Lijun, 52, was once the police chief of Chongqing municipality - developing a reputation for fighting corruption and for his massive anti-organized crime crackdowns.
He was appointed vice mayor of Chongqing in charge of economic affairs in February.
