Iraq: 31 killed in morning attacks

At least 31 people were killed in a string of morning attacks across Baghdad on Thursday. Iraqi officials say the bombings and shootings mostly appeared to target police.

The worst blast detonated in the Shiite neighborhood of Karradah during rush hour, shaking buildings and windows blocks away.

Police say a further 9 people were killed and 24 wounded in the explosion near a security checkpoint, at the centre of Baghdad's downtown shopping district.

Officials at nearby hospitals confirmed the casualties. Six more policemen were killed in a drive-by shooting by gunmen with silenced pistols, at a security checkpoint in a Sunni area in northern Baghdad.
