NYU Shanghai is the latest independent entity authorized to grant degrees in China. There are over 400 Sino-foreign institutions of higher learning and study programs in China located in 19 provinces and 3 municipalities.

Other famous independent universities also include: the University of Nottingham-Ningbo in Eastern China’s Zhejiang province - founded in 2003. And Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University - set up in 2006 in Eastern China’s Jiangsu province.
