The Iranian army is holding annual military exercises in the capital Tehran after announcing upgrades to tanks. |
April 18th is the Islamic Republic's Military Day. The annual parade will showcase all Iran's armed forces and new military equipment. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will speak at the event.
The army and the Revolutionary Guards will carry out a special joint air exercise, the first of its kind since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. A military commander says eight more joint exercises are planned in the upcoming year.
The parade route goes past the grave of the Islamic Revolution's late leader, the Ayatollah Khomeni. The parade is dedicated to what Iran calls Holy Protection Week.
