Gone are the days of dreamy white ballgowns for New York fashion designer Jason Wu. For Spring 2013, Wu whipped up a kinky collection in leather and lace.

Wu showcased his Spring 2013 collection on Friday in New York. In the front row sat fashion royalty and one of Wu’s major champions: Anna Wintour, editor in chief of American Vogue. Wu became famous when US First Lady Michelle Obama picked his romantic white gown to wear to the 2009 inaugural ball.

The collection is a collaboration with luxury lingerie brand La Perla, and was inspired by two very different, yet similar photographers: Helmut Newton, famous for his black-and white photos, and Lillian Bassman, who gained world fame in the 1940s and 50s for her dreamlike pictures of women.

Jason Wu, Fashion Designer, said, "I am a huge fan of both of their work for such a long time. And what I found in common with the two of them was the appreciation for the feminine form. Female beauty and the female body, and that was very evident through the collection."

Wu was born in Taiwan and moved to Canada as a child.

On the catwalk, tight leather dresses, exposed bras, and shorts and skirts mixed with lace and chiffon tops created a provocative lingerie-like look. Colors dominating his runway were black, white, coral pink and navy blue.

Jason Wu, said, "I wanted to walk the fine line between the hard and the soft. That was very important, mixing lace, chiffon with leather. That was a little tougher. It was really important to sort of be able to balance the lingerie references with the Helmut Newton references. And I think at the end it was really my vision of a strong, powerful, beautiful, sexy woman. "

Wu was among more than 100 designers who will present their Spring/Summer 2013 collections at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York through September 13.
