Parents across China were shocked this week by a set of photos showing gross physical abuse against kindergarten-aged children. News of the abuse quickly spread across the Web, drawing millions of posts on Chinese microblogs. Now two teachers from Blue Peacock kindergarten in Wenling of Zhejiang province, have been detained by the police.

This picture sparked massive public outrage after when hit the internet last week.

It depicts a teacher lifting a student off the ground by his ears, the boy obviously screaming in pain while the teacher looks on, grinning.

20 year old Yan Yanhong, is alleged to be the teacher in the photo which she asked a colleague to take.

She seemed oddly unperturbed when confronted with the allegations, and asked why she did this.

She says, "I was doing it for fun. It's not a big deal."

According to authorities, she had been working without an education license. And the child's mother, meanwhile, says she's racked with her own guilt over the abuse.

She says, "He once told us the teacher had punished him, but we thought it was a minor act, not such severe physical abuse."

The boy is now at home under his parents' care, but they worry the incident has left behind some pretty deep scars.

Ms Chen, mother of abused child, says, "He often wakes up at the night screaming after having nightmares."

Investigation by local police shows that Yan may have began abusing the children as early as in 2010, when she first took the kindergarten job. Experts say that the young age of the child involved may make this action particularly damaging.

Yu Wei, child therapist, says, "Children at this age believe that every act done by the teacher is correct, so they may develop an appetite for violence toward other children, or even their own."

For now, everyone's doing their best to pick up the pieces. A second teacher has been detained, and the kindergarten's principal has been removed from the post. Psychologists have also arranged treatment for the children.
