Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei has said that China has always adopted a responsible and prudent attitude on the exportation of weapons.
The spokesman made the statement at his daily press conference on Monday and added that China rigorously fulfills its international obligations, including United Nations resolutions, and enforces domestic rules.
Hong's remarks came after a report was released by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, claiming that China had replaced Britain as the world's fifth largest weapons supplier with five percent of the global trade.
Hong Lei said, "China, on the issue of arms exports, has always taken a responsible and prudent attitude. Apart from adhering to UN Security Council resolutions and international law, China also strictly implements its domestic regulations. On arms exports, China sticks to three principles. First, that it is conducive to the recipient country's justifiable self-defense needs. Second, it does not damage the relevant regional and global peace, security and stability. Third, it does not interfere in other countries' internal affairs."
