Former South African President Nelson Mandela has spent a fourth night in hospital. The 94-year-old hero of the anti-apartheid struggle is suffering from pneumonia. The presidency say Mandela is responding well to treatment - but he's not likely to be discharged yet.
On this day of all days, Nelson Mandela will want to be at home.Easter Sunday - a time spent with family, at church.
But the former president has instead remained here, for a 4th night … he's suffering from pneumonia.
The presidency waited until the worst was over before breaking the news - presumably concerned it might spark panic. But this is a relapse - we now know he also had pneumonia back in December. For a 94 year old, that's worrying.
There is a change in tone from government now - perhaps aware of Mr. Mandela's increasing frailty … preparing people for what, sadly, will one day be inevitable. Raising questions once again, about what a post-Mandela era may hold.
