Hundreds of protesters have gathered outside the Egyptian chief prosecutor's office in the capital, Cairo, to demand the resignation of president Mohamed Morsi.
Protest action was organized across the country to mark the fifth anniversary of the formation of the April 6th Youth Movement. The movement initially backed Morsi in the presidential run-offs in June, against a former regime-era official. But it has grown disillusioned with Morsi, and now accuses him of trying to monopolize power. The group is demanding changes to the new constitution, which was passed in a contentious referendum last year.
The constitution allows the president to appoint his own attorney general, a move the opposition says blurs the separation of powers. Some in the group are also angry that Morsi's government is engaged in reconciliation talks with former regime officials. They are demanding sweeping reforms in the country's police and judiciary.
