Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has made a ritual offering at a controversial World War II linked shrine in Tokyo on Sunday, a gesture that's upset many Asian victims of Japan’s war time aggression.

The Yasukuni Shrine is where 14 Japanese convicted war criminals are honored along with other war dead. Abe offered a pine tree as a ritual offering to the shrine.

Other Japanese cabinet members including Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, Chairman of the National Public Safety Commission Keiji Furuya and Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato have also visited the shrine.

China and South Korea have repeatedly urged Japanese officials to stop visiting the shrine and take a responsible attitude towards history.
