The son of Pakistan's former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has been abducted by gunmen in Pakistan's southern Punjab province. The incident occured Thursday at an election rally where Ali Haider Gilani, the son of ex-premier Yousuf Raza Gilani of the Pakistan People's Party, was meeting supporters.
The rally had been organised in Multan from where Ali Haider is running for a provincial assembly seat. Eyewitnesses said the attackers first pulled up in a car and motorcycle outside the venue where the younger Gilani was meeting with a few hundred supporters. They grabbed and threw him into a vehicle and drove off.
The former prime minister was not at the event when his son was taken. Two of Ali Haider's guards were killed in the attack.
Yousuf Raza Gilani said, "Elections are a national duty. We don't want to boycott the elections. We want to see the country stable. But the incident has taken place, so action should be taken against those who are responsible for this. All of Paksitan is demanding Ali Haider's early recovery."
