One of musical highlight in Shanghai was Bombay Jayashri (JAY-ah-sri), a singer from the south Indian Carnatic tradition. She recently splashed into Western consciousness for her involvement with the Oscar-winning film "Life of Pi."
Listeners were thrilled to hear an acoustic, live version of "Pi's Lullaby," the film's theme song. Bombay Jayashri got involved in the film after its musical director Mychael Danna heard her album of Indian lullabies in several languages. The theme song also earned an Academy award nomination for Best Original Song - the first Tamil song to be nominated.

Bombay Jayashri, Singer, said, "First of all, I want to thank everybody in China for this wonderful opportunity. I think we're among the first musicians from India to be here. Very honored and proud, and privileged. "
This is the first time Bombay Jayashri has performed in Shanghai. She says she hopes more people will learn about carnatic music, which is often about communication between humans and gods. It describes the relationship between humanity and nature, where people can always find inner peace.
Venkat Raman, Audience Member, said, "She is India's most traditional famous singer. Very awesome music, very good singer. In fact there is no banner so not many Indian people knew this. I hope that the festival next time can give a big banner for her. "
Najma Haque, Audience Member, said, "It was a big surprise coming to Shanghai and listening to Indian classic music. It was amazing. And the fact that so many people showed up to listen to the music. It was great. I listen to Indian music and especially her last song, the lullaby, I loved it. "
This year's festival also featured other world music styles including African rhythms by Reunion, a chorus from Georgia, and singers from Bulgaria. The festival has been bringing world music performances to Shanghai every year since 2008.
