Taiwan has staged a maritime drill in waters south of the island, close to the area where a Taiwan fishing vessel was fired on by Philippine Coast Guards last week.

Two Lafayette frigates, one Kidd-class destroyer, two missile boats, an assorted Mirage and jet fighters took part in the drill. The military exercise is bringing together Taiwan's coast guard, navy and air force. It's the largest joint drill conducted by Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration and its military.

Although the vessels will not fire live ammunition, Taiwan authorities say they will authorise live firing in emergency cases. The drill aims to better protect the safety of Taiwan fishermen in the region.
