Taiwan authorities have said that they are ready to send a second investigation team to the Philippines, but will only do so, after they have worked out the details of how a joint investigation into the shooting incident will proceed.
"We will send our investigation team once the Philippines is ready to receive them," said Lee Chia-Fei, the spokeswoman of Ma Ying-Jeou's office.
Taiwan authorities are making their position clear to avoid a further escalation in tensions and any disagreement over how the probe should proceed. Taiwan leader Ma Ying-Jeou urged the Philippines to communicate with Taiwan to resolve the issue as early as possible. On Saturday, the first investigation team returned to Taipei from Manila.
The head of the team has described the attitude of Philippines' officials towards conducting a joint investigation unsatisfactory and unacceptable. He added that evidence showed that the May 9 shooting of a Taiwan fisherman by the Philippines Coast Guard was intentional.
