China Earthquake Networks Center says a magnitude 6.7 earthquake has hit central Taiwan's Nantou County.
The quake struck at a depth of 9 kilometers at around a quarter to two this afternoon, local time. The quake rattled the island's capital, Taipei. Some of the island's roads have been blocked by landslides. More than one thousand tourists are trapped in a resort in Nantou.
A hiker was hit by falling rocks and has been confirmed dead before an ambulance could get to the scene. The quake was also felt in China's southeastern provinces of Fujian and Guangdong. Taiwan Television says the quake caused a gas explosion in central Taiwan but it gave no details.
