A sexy alien seductress, the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong, and a space pirate, all of these are featuring in the latest releases at the Venice Film festival.
Scarlett Johansson injected some Hollywood glamor to the Venice Film Festival as she premiered her latest movie "Under the Skin." The 28-year-old actress wore a black off-the-shoulder full length dress with plunging neck line for the event. The film, which is showing in the competition, sees Johansson as a sexy alien on a road-trip through Scotland seducing and destroying men along her route.
Over the course of her journey she begins to gain some sensitivity and human emotions. "Under the Skin" is one of 20 films competing for the coveted Golden Lion award.
And in a totally different genre is a film that documents Lance Armstrong's fall from grace. Alex Gibney's "The Armstrong Lie" has seen an interesting course of events. Four years ago, Alex Gibney was hired to make a film about Lance Armstrong's comeback to cycling. However, the project was shelved when the star's doping scandal erupted, only to be re-opened after Armstrong's shocking confession to Oprah Winfrey in January of this year. For Gibney, restarting the documentary was a challenge, especially as he was now making a completely different film.
Alex Gibney, Director, "The Armstrong Lie", said, "I always thought I was making a film about will, you know, the will to win, and I think in Lance Armstrong's case [start video]it was also inspirational because the will to win was tied in to actual survival. I mean the will to win over cancer. So, what a story, but I suspected that when somebody has that much will, there's a darker side to that always."
And in the world of animations, "Harlock: Space Pirate" is the labor of love of Japans' top animators and CG specialists. The action drama is a remake of "Space Pirate Captain Harlock" that first appeared in 1977."The Armstrong Lie" picks up in 2013 and presents an insider's view of the unraveling of one of the most extraordinary figures in sports. In the film, Armstrong himself says: "I didn't live a lot of lies, but I lived one big one." Since admitting he used performance enhancing drugs, not only has Armstrong's sporting reputation been ruined, he's also facing legal troubles.
The film is brought to the big screen by one of the country's most experienced CG animation directors, Shinji Aramaki.
Shinji Aramaki, Director, "Harlock: Space Pirate", said, "I was 17 when the Harlock manga started to appear and it had huge impact on me. I collected all the Matsumoto works and so when the talk that Harlock might be happening started I felt it was something I couldn't let anyone else do."
The film, which opens in Japan on September 7, is screening Out of Competition at the Venice Film festival. The film is also on trend with the increased appreciation of anime films around the world.
