Jason Wu is famous for designing several dresses for Michelle Obama. Now his latest collection seemed distinctly moody at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

His colours were muted: black, eggplant, green and silver. There was a mixture of textures, with embroidered gowns and shiny slip dresses - some with tiny spaghetti straps - among the most successful pieces. Coats were big and boxy, looking like they could be disappeared into.

"I was going for something darkly romantic, something, you know, very cozy. There is something very cozy about these outerwear, and about these slip dresses skimming the body. I call the collection sort of a 'unflustered beauty'," Wu said.

"I kind of woke up with that, those two words. Those are good words for the collection, because you know, underneath the really luxurious furs and cashmeres, come slip dresses that are held together by spaghetti straps that are made from the most luxurious fabrics that move around the body.

"It felt sexy, felt confident, like what the luxury customer wants."
