If you are in North or South America or eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean, and you're not asleep. There's a special lunar eclipse happening, with the moon turning red, a phenomenon that's known as the Blood Moon.

The moon is currently being blocked from the sun by the earth but tiny amounts of light still get through, and the diffraction of the light travelling through the earth's atmosphere at sunrise and sunset makes the moon turn a deep copper red.

The total eclipse got going at around seven o'clock GMT. It should last around 78 minutes so plenty of time to get out of bed and find your binoculars. Scientists say this is the first of four consecutive total lunar eclipses that will be viewable in North America in the coming 18 months.
