With China growing in clout on the world stage, the country has strengthened efforts to modernize its army with the agenda of promoting regional stability. The Engineering Academy of Armored Forces of the People's Liberation Army welcomes CCTV reporter Hou Na and an entourage of international journalists on the occasion of the 87th Anniversary of the Chinese Army.

The Engineering Academy of Armored Forces of the People's Liberation Army welcomes CCTV reporter Hou Na and an entourage of international journalists on the occasion of the 87th Anniversary of the Chinese Army.

In a move billed as transparent by some, more than a hundred journalists both from China and other parts of world were invited to a rare opportunity—A visit for the first time to the PLA Engineering Academy of Armored Forces.

"China is steadily modernizing its military and enacting reforms to the army and national defense. Each year before the August 1st Army Day, we arrange journalist visits to our military bases. China's increased military strength is not a threat to the world. On the contrary, it's a positive contribution to the world." said Geng Yansheng, Spokesman, Chinese Ministry of National Defense.

The Chinese Army is keen to showcase this—what it describes as highly qualified caliber personnel, in large part from recruiting more educated soldiers amongst its ranks, all part of reform efforts to modernize itself.

Stephen Mcdonell from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has made multiple visits to China's military bases, and lauds China's increasingly open stance.

"Other countries are looking at China's military modernization.....it's a good start." said Stephen Mcdonell, Correspondent, Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Since 2008, China has opened some key military bases to visits from international journalists. China's military is now in contact with more than 150 countries and participates in about 400 exchanges with foreign military delegations each year.

Over the past 87 years, the PLA has made outstanding contributions to safeguarding the nation's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity. The Chinese Army will continue to follow the independent foreign policy of peace, deepen friendly exchanges and cooperation with the armed forces of other countries and contribute to building a harmonious world of enduring peace and common prosperity.
